Prison Inmate Search and County Jail Inmates
LOCATING AN INMATE
The New York State Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) assigns a Department Identification Number (DIN) to each inmate admitted to a New York State prison or county jail. This number is used as an identifier for the inmate while he or she is in the custody of the DOCS.

What information do I need for a successful search?

  • It helps to know the DIN number to do the prison inmate search or locate county jail inmates.
  • Inmate’s complete name
  • Inmate’s date of birth
  • What if I don’t know the DIN number?
You can still look up an inmate. Go to prison inmate search and county jail inmates Lookup service.

With all of the information entered, the website will show you the name of the facility where the inmate currently is held.

DOCS recommendations for visiting an inmate:

  • Make sure you have location of inmate by finding it online or by calling the facility
  • Note that inmates are sometimes transferred (unscheduled transfers do not happen often), so confirm the inmate is at the location before you make a sometimes long trip
  • Need to do a prison inmate search for youthful offender in New York?
Youthful Offender status inmates are not listed on the DOCS’s website. These inmates, can be located by calling the DOCS Central Office at 518-457-5000 during normal business hours. If an inmate is in the process of being transferred, his or her location will not be available for a few days until he or she arrives at the next facility. The DOCS does not notify family members of the transfer, since it is the inmate’s responsibility to notify you of their new location.

How to make contact after transfer or return to a facility
The inmate is permitted one collect phone call to his or her family within 24 hours of arrival at a new facility. In some instances, security precautions may prevent the inmate from making this call, so a staff person designated by the Superintendent (typically from the Guidance and Counseling Unit), shall make the call to a person of the inmate’s choice. This security precaution does not apply to an inmate in “transit status”, or temporarily held at a transit facility overnight or for a weekend during transfer. It applies to inmates in holding units in the maximum security Auburn Prison and Sing Sing Prison.

A prison or county jail inmate who is “out to court” or in a hospital for a period of 5 days or more will be allowed to make a collect phone call within 24 hours of returning to the jail or prison facility. Collect calls from an outside hospital (note: other than a secure ward), may be made only with the approval of the Superintendent or other designated staff person.

How does it work if someone is jailed after parole violation?
Someone who has violated their parole will be allowed to make one collect phone call within 24 hours after entering the facility to a person of his or her choice.
