Jurors at the Bronx "Black Sunday" trial found two tenants not guilty of all charges related to the deaths of Lt. Curtis Meyran and firefighter John Bellew during a 2005 fire.

Caridad Coste and Rafael Castillo were being tried on criminally negligent homicide, second-degree manslaughter, and second-degree reckless endangerment charges for allegedly illegally subdividing their apartments to make room for bedrooms for renters.

Prosecutors charged the tenants subdivided rooms which resulted in a blocked the fire escape. The firefighters Lt. Curtis Meyran and firefighter John Bellew were forced to jump four stories to their deaths on January 23, 2005. Learn more.

New York criminal attorney Lisa Pelosi told the jury that frozen hydrants, poor radio communication and burst water hoses were responsible for the spread of the fire, not the defendant. A Fire Department investigation found serious problems with procedures and equipment, including breakdowns in communication and a lack of safety rope.

Lisa Pelosi's client, the tenant, was found not guilty.

In a seperate trial related to the same tragic event, a jury convicted the building manager and his business partner for the Black Sunday fire that killed the two firefighters. These defendants were represented by other attorneys. Learn more
